Alocasia Amazonica has one of the more remarkable origin stories in the houseplant world. Bred in 1950s Miami by nursery owner Salvadore Mauro, who crossed the critically endangered Philippine kris plant, Alocasia sanderiana, with the historic Bornean cultivar Alocasia longiloba 'Watsoniana' at his Amazon Nursery, giving the plant both its name and its registered cultivar status with the IAS (https:// www.aroidcultivars.org/aroid-cultivars/alocasia/'polly'). 'Polly' followed as a more compact selection from that original Amazonica, and the Pink variegation is a more recent chimeric sport that emerged within cultivation. Each leaf is marked with soft pink, blush, cream, and green marbling against glossy arrow-shaped foliage, with new leaves often flushing rosy or coppery tones before maturing, making every unfurl a unique event. Thrives in bright indirect light, high humidity, and a well-aerated aroid mix kept evenly moist; variegated sections are sensitive to direct sun and stress, so stable conditions are key to maintaining that signature pink.
