Philodendron gloriosum 'Tricolor' is a rare variegated cultivar of the terrestrial species Philodendron gloriosum, a creeping philodendron native to the tropical rainforests of Colombia and formally described by German botanist Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in the 19th century. Unlike climbing philodendrons, it grows horizontally along the surface of the substrate, producing large, velvety, heart-shaped leaves with striking white venation. The 'Tricolor' form is highly prized for its unpredictable variegation, with each leaf displaying a unique combination of deep green, mint green, creamy white, and occasionally soft pink or bronze hues as new foliage emerges and matures. Best grown in warm temperatures, high humidity, bright indirect light, and a coarse, well-draining substrate, this exceptional collector plant develops its finest foliage when allowed to crawl naturally in an elongated planter. Because its variegation is genetically unstable, every specimen is truly one of a kind, making Philodendron gloriosum 'Tricolor' one of the most sought-after velvet-leaf philodendrons in cultivation.
