Monstera deliciosa ‘Unniiae’ is a rare cultivar of the classic Monstera deliciosa, discovered as a natural sport in a Swedish garden center and later named by its discoverer after her youngest daughter, “Unni”, a name drawn from Norse mythology meaning “small wave” or “loved.” You can see Mike D’Andrea’s short on this plant here (https://youtu.be/lG20Dp6J9r4). Monstera Unniiae is an IAS registered cultivar, and details can be found here (https://www.aroidcultivars.org/aroid-cultivars/monstera/unniiae ). Unlike the broad, rounded fenestrations of the straight species, ‘Unniiae’ is defined by its highly distorted foliage, with leaves that are thick and develop deep splits and holes in an irregular, contorted pattern rather than orderly perforations. This twisting, skeletal look becomes more pronounced with maturity, with new growth often emerging increasingly deformed, an effect growers have likened to strands of seaweed drifting in ocean currents.
