Cattleya violacea was first described by Carl Ludwig Willdenow in 1805 as Epidendrum violaceum before being reclassified into the genus Cattleya by John Lindley in 1833. Native to the lowland Amazon Basin across Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, and the Guianas, it grows epiphytically on tree branches below 500 meters elevation within the Orchidaceae family. It is regarded as one of the most prized species in the Cattleya alliance for its large, flat violet-purple blooms with a deep magenta lip and strong natural fragrance. In cultivation it requires bright indirect light, temperatures of 65–85°F, humidity of 65–85%, strong air circulation, and a coarse fast-draining medium such as bark or lava rock with a distinct dry period between waterings. Mature specimens produce one to two bloom cycles annually with two to five flowers per spike.
