Alocasia ‘Sarian’ Albo Variegated is a white-variegated form of Alocasia ‘Sarian,’ an interspecific hybrid between Alocasia zebrina and Alocasia micholitziana, two species native to the Philippines. The hybrid itself is a modern creation, believed to have emerged only in the last couple of decades rather than descending from any wild lineage, and it takes its name from Zac B. Sarian, a well-known Filipino agricultural journalist. The ‘Sarian’ hybrid combines zebrina’s signature striped, mottled petioles with micholitziana’s broad arrowhead leaf shape, and in this variegated line, patches of the leaf lose chlorophyll entirely, producing bold white-and-cream marbling, splashes, or sectoral blocks against the dark green base. Because this variegation is unstable and chimeric rather than a fixed genetic trait, each leaf is unpredictable, sometimes richly patterned, sometimes reverting to plain green, making an heavily variegated ‘Sarian’ a prized and fragile find among collectors.
TC plants are grown in a laboratory environment on nutrient-rich agar and have not yet been acclimated to greenhouse or household growing conditions. Upon receipt, buyers will be responsible for the acclimation process, including removal from the culture media and transition to appropriate humidity and growing conditions.
Plants may vary in size, leaf count, root development, and overall appearance. Minor cosmetic imperfections, condensation, or variations in growth are normal for tissue-cultured plants and do not affect viability. The photos provided represent the species or cultivar being offered and may not depict the exact plant received, although we always do what we can to pick the next largest plant.
