Alocasia longiloba 'Purple Prince' is a striking cultivated selection of Alocasia longiloba, a species native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, including parts of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Borneo. A member of the aroid family (Araceae), it is prized for its elongated, arrow-shaped foliage, dramatic silver-gray venation, and rich purple-to-burgundy undersides that inspired its cultivar name. It was first formally described in 1856 and entered cultivation through Victorian-era nurseries and 19th-century botanical collectors. It is the backbone of some of the hobby’s most iconic hybrids, including Alocasia ‘Amazonica’ and ‘Polly,’ both of which trace directly back to the longiloba ‘Watsoniana’ cultivar. To grow one is to hold a piece of living horticultural history. Growing from an upright, clumping habit, Alocasia longiloba 'Purple Prince' thrives in warm temperatures, elevated humidity, bright indirect light, and a well-draining substrate that balances moisture retention with excellent aeration. With proper care, this elegant tropical aroid produces increasingly impressive foliage, making it a highly desirable choice for collectors seeking a refined and distinctive Alocasia.
