Alocasia longiloba Grandis ‘Purple Vein’ is a selected cultivar within the wider Alocasia longiloba complex, a species native to the humid understory forests of Southeast Asia, with recorded populations spanning Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo, and the Philippines. The species itself was formally described in 1856, and much of what’s grown today as “longiloba types” traces back to plants that circulated through Victorian-era nurseries. ‘Purple Vein’ distinguishes itself with glossy, dark green blades whose prominent veins flush purple as new leaves emerge, echoing the rich violet undersides seen across several longiloba selections. As one of the newer named forms within this historic species complex, it carries forward the same long-lobed, sculptural leaf shape that made longiloba the genetic backbone behind legendary hybrids like Alocasia ‘Amazonica’ and ‘Polly.’
TC plants are grown in a laboratory environment on nutrient-rich agar and have not yet been acclimated to greenhouse or household growing conditions. Upon receipt, buyers will be responsible for the acclimation process, including removal from the culture media and transition to appropriate humidity and growing conditions.
Plants may vary in size, leaf count, root development, and overall appearance. Minor cosmetic imperfections, condensation, or variations in growth are normal for tissue-cultured plants and do not affect viability. The photos provided represent the species or cultivar being offered and may not depict the exact plant received, although we always do what we can to pick the next largest plant.
