Alocasia micholitziana ‘Frydek’ Variegated is a chimeric variegated form of Alocasia micholitziana, a species native to montane forests on Luzon in the Philippines, where it grows in shaded understory at 1,200–1,500 meters elevation. The species was first formally described in 1912 by Henry Frederick Conrad Sander and introduced to cultivation by German plant collector Wilhelm Micholitz, working on Sander’s behalf. The trade name ‘Frydek’ most likely descends from ‘Freydyk,’ a name given to this variegated form specifically by an American nursery in the late 1990s, before it was later carried over, likely by typo, to the plain green cultivar as well, muddying the naming history that persists today. Because its white-and-green patterning comes from unstable chimeric variegation rather than a fixed genetic trait, no two leaves are quite alike, and the plant must be propagated carefully to preserve the variegation at all, making each specimen a small, unrepeatable piece of that original Luzon rainforest lineage.

TC plants are grown in a laboratory environment on nutrient-rich agar and have not yet been acclimated to greenhouse or household growing conditions. Upon receipt, buyers will be responsible for the acclimation process, including removal from the culture media and transition to appropriate humidity and growing conditions.

Plants may vary in size, leaf count, root development, and overall appearance. Minor cosmetic imperfections, condensation, or variations in growth are normal for tissue-cultured plants and do not affect viability. The photos provided represent the species or cultivar being offered and may not depict the exact plant received, although we always do what we can to pick the next largest specimen.
